Short Skirts & Snappy Salutes
A Woman's Memoir of the WWII Years
by Caroline Morrison Garrett
Caroline Morrison comes of age during the turbulent war years of the 1940s. The attack on Pearl Harbor shatters the illusion that young women should lead sheltered and protected lives, and women realize they must help the war effort. Caroline is no exception. A civil service exam she takes as a class assignment in her senior year of college leads to an internship in hospital dietetics at Walter Reed Army Medical Center followed by a commission as second lieutenant in the Medical Corps.
September 1944 begins a year of intense training and long hours at Walter Reed in Washington, D.C. Tension and excitement grip the city and the crowded hospital. Caroline finds herself involved in the lives of soldiers severely wounded in the Battle of the Bulge, supervises General Pershing’s meals, encounters the fury of General Patton, celebrates General Eisenhower's success, and sees the spirits of patients lifted by visits from Helen Keller and Eleanor Roosevelt.
During Lt. Caroline Morrison’s colorful army career, she helps paralyzed patients, works with German prisoners, and even receives a proposal for marriage from an Eskimo private.
With warmth and humor, Caroline Morrison Garrett describes her adventures and reflects on how events and people shaped her life.

Great Memoir ~ Jan Agusta
I bought this book for my mother who served as an Army nurse in WW II. She loved the book and could hardly put it down. It was humorous in parts and yet told historic events of the time.
Engaging, funny, and poignant ~ Annonymous
This is a rich book chock full of funny stories. I loved being transported to a different, dramatic time and glimpsing what it was really like for a woman to be in the Army in the 1940s.
I couldn't put it down ~ Marit Henly
I felt like I was there in the early 1940s, living in Caroline Morrison's shoes, as she adjusted to the changes WWII forced on everyone living in the US. The book is full of wonderful stories and characters, both famous and ordinary. Even if you don't love history, this is a must-read.

The Author:
Caroline M. Garrett remains true to her New England heritage after forty-two years in California. Old furniture scrounged from Connecticut attics and stories about her Yankee grandfather contributed to the success of classes she taught for fifteen years at Antiques and Collectables in San Jose, California.
She and her husband, Eliot raised a son, Rob, and a daughter, Pam, before Eliot’s death in 1985. At that time, Caroline’s life changed direction. Her mother, Hazel Morrison, left her home in Bethel, Connecticut, to live with her daughter. Years of travel, entertaining, and laughter culminated in the publication of Hazel’s book of poetry, “A Fluttering of Wings,” on her one hundred fourth birthday. Caroline's mother retained her zest for life until her death at the age of one hundred seven.
Caroline is surprised to have accomplished her goal of writing Short Skirts and Snappy Salutes in her eighty-sixth year.
She currently lives in Northern California. You can contact her by sending an email to CarolineMGarrett@verizon.net |

WAR YEARS: Caroline Garrett's book, Short Skirts and Snappy Salutes: A Woman's Memoir of the WWII Years, was recently released from Robertson Publishing, and Los Gatan Marti Henley threw a book signing party for the 86-year-old author. The book is particularly relevant now, what with Ken Burns' documentary, The War, playing on PBS.
Garrett's memoir covers the WWII years—which for her meant college at a southern campus. (As a Maine Yankee, she says, "They were still fighting the Civil War.") She trained to become an Army dietitian at Walter Reed Hospital. The memoir is full of famous names such as the generals Pershing and Patton and first lady Eleanor Roosevelt.
Says Henley about the book: "It's engaging and chockfull of good stories--with incredible humor and poignancy. It's important history for all generations." Henley and Garrett met through Lynn Rogers' memoir class, offered through the town's ed/rec department.
Robertson Publishing, based in Los Gatos.
