El Vago

By James Sullivan

Traveling Around the World More Than Two Decades and Still Going!

James Sullivan began traveling the world in 1986, and hasn’t stopped since. Thanks to this wanderlust, he eventually traveled his way to (and through!) all seven continents and 146 countries. James used every form of transportation that was available, and was usually accompanied by his wife Diane.

When telling others of these travels, he received quite a few comments pertaining to his use of wit, descriptions and hyperbole. Thus was born one of those decisions that just seemed to make itself; “write these stories down!” He did, and began calling himself “El Vago” (“The Bum” in Spanish) in all correspondence and stories thereafter.

El Vago: A Vagabond Travels Around the World is the result of those travels with stories told by James in his own colorful, interesting and extremely personal style.

Gypsy on a Jet...
or by any other means available: camel, elephant, donkey, eilapedated broken-down bus, 100-plus-year-old ship, motorbike, shanks' mare, etc.

by James L. Sullivan, Ph.D.

Traveling through Aftica

Jim Sullivan, aka “The Wanderer,” spent three years traveling and working throughout Africa (from January 2001 to February 2004), where he visited 22 countries while existing on an extremely limited budget. His mode of travel consisted of whatever was available (broken-down buses, ships that should have been junked years prior, backs of motor-bikes, and just plain backpacking).

A man of wit and perception, he brings to life the people of Africa, the wide gaps between poverty and wealth, and gives vivid descriptions of cities, jungles and wild animals he viewed on his great adventure. Read Sample Chapter

Note: All profits from the sale of "Gypsy on a Jet" are being donated to charities. The first donation went to the volunteers at An Binh Hospital in Vietnam. Jim traveled with hospital volunteers to bring food and medicine to extremely poor areas in the countryside.

PARANOIA,
Power & Prayer

How I ruined a military career, then healed myself by helping others.

by James L. Sullivan, Ph.D.

In 1972 James Sullivan, upon being assigned to Vietnam for the second time, ended up in a key position in the central joint intelligence activity for Vietnam. There all information of all categories (Secret, Top Secret, Communication Intercepts, Cosmic, agent reports, etc.) flowed and was processed into intelligence. This intelligence was used as the basis for all joint offensive and defensive decisions throughout Southern Vietnam.

Being placed in a position as in-county chief, Sullivan had five majors plus other officers and sergeants working for him. Seven colonels were his superiors. No one was directly assisting him.

At a crucial time when it was thought an overall enemy offensive was imminent, Sullivan, with his team of 25, was required to turn out two-hour briefings with a maximum of two-hours notice. Under a high-level of nervousness, Sullivan wrote what he thought was a funny note. Three days later he was hospitalized for being psychotic. Then when he was released he was assigned to the most dangerous province in the country.

James is now 77 years-old and he hasn’t hung up his flying carpet quite yet!

"We can use many names here: vagabond, tramp, bum, traveler, wanderer, etc., all translatable in practical every day language. For some cultures, which are basically nomadic, there would be a wider vocabulary as is the case for snow and ice in the Eskimo language. There are some who are addicted to this disease (as some would consider it), who of course are quite well known, i.e., Steinbeck, Hemingway, Jack London, Sterling Haydon to name a few. Of course, others became heroes because of their contributions related to their ventures: Mar Da Columbus, Cortez, Pizarro, and let’s not forget Father Serra, who was the priest responsible for the founding of the majority of Catholic missions along the California coast.

If one does not have this lure, there is no way he can understand the reason for those of us who do and the need to see the other side of the mountain." ~ Jim Sullivan

Jim is currently living in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam, where he has adopted an orphanage. He invites you to drop him an email: JaimeLSullivan@yahoo.com
