Chronos

Far From Earth,
There Is A Planet So Rich In Resources That It Can Change The Galaxy’s Balance Of Power

Chronos is a military science fiction novel which takes place in the year 2132. Man’s advances in space exploration have been evolutionary, not revolutionary. The space ships are not orders of magnitude faster than twentieth century technology, batteries for electronic weapons still take up lots of room, and expensive high tech weaponry cannot be maintained very far from the factories that created it.

The frontier of mankind's space exploration is twelve years of space travel away from Earth. The corporations which are involved in planetary mining decide that it is easier and more profitable to enslave their workers and there is nothing that the governments of Earth can do about it. The best Earth can do is to hire mercenaries and utilize local militias.

When the Syndicate takes over Chronos to monopolize its rich resources, they begin to develop factories to make the kinds of high tech weapons that are in short supply. If they succeed, these high tech weapons will tip the balance of power.

A group of mercenaries is asked to go to Chronos and fight the huge robotic armored divisions with handheld rockets. Several surprises aid the team as they uncover the secrets of the planet’s population once they get there, including telepathic aliens and a colony of miners who turn out to be incredibly resourceful allies.

"Chronos" tells the story of Zach Murphy and the Wolverines as Earth's commandos are tasked with a mission to free the people, both human and alien, of Chronos from the iron grasp of an organization oppressing them. The task is never easy, and "Chronos" proves to be a fun and exciting adventure in science fiction.

CHRONOS ~reviewed by Barry Hunter
It is 2132 and man has expanded his reach into space. They are now so far from Earth that they must supply their needs without any assistance. Weapons range from twentieth century rifles and grenades to technological wonders. The group of Commandos known as the Wolverines must work together to survive where survival is not guaranteed.

Zach Murphy and his team are assigned the job of liberating the people of Chronos which has been taken over by the Syndicate. Chronos is valuable to the Syndicate because of the abundance of rare minerals and an alien race called the Amalthea, about which very little is known.

Ciolli has written a rip roaring, action packed novel that shows how a well oiled military squad can overcome obstacles that would cause others to turn tail and run. It is also a novel of how one small planet can make a large impact on the balance of power.

This is his first novel, but I expect to see more from him in the future. If you like the HAMMERS SLAMMERS stories from David Drake, CHRONOS will be a welcomed addition to your reading list.

5 starsGreat military sci fi, April 21, 2010
This book is a great read if you like military science fiction. It contains a lot of technical detail about weaponry. Although if you're expecting to read about "ray guns", you'll be disappointed. Based on the premise that modern weapons would be difficult to maintain so far from a supply source, the characters actually use old-fashioned weapons in their fights with robots. It's a quick read with a good plot. Left me wanting a sequel.

5 starsChronos is Awesome!, August 10, 2010
Chronos is an awesome book! Tom takes an interesting twist on space warfare logistics where the combatants end up with a wide range of technology due to the amount of time it takes to travel between stars. The book reminds of books written by the Chris Bunch and Allen Cole. It's well worth the read!

Tom Ciolli has spent twenty years writing technical specifications while doing product and project management in Silicon Valley.

Chronos is his first creative writing effort. Given Tom’s appreciation for the novels of Rex Stout, Ian Fleming and Arthur Conan Doyle, it was a surprise to see that what started out as a short action story led to a science fiction novel.  For more information visit chronosscifi.com
